Old diesel lovomotives are modernized in Poland to meet the today requirements concerning the fuel consumption, reliability, durability and toxic emissions. As basic criterion of the modernization efficieny, the minimum of life cycle cost (LCC) was assumed. A six-step procedure was developed for the evaluation. Identification of the problem, reliability, availability and maintainability analysis, development of the LCC model and its analysis, survey of the results and their verification are the particular steps of the procedure. As example, modernization of the diesel locomotive ST44 was analyzed to evaluate its economic effectiveness. Three various engines were taken into consideration to replace the old one. After the LCC analysis, the most expensive engine was chosen for use while it allowed a substantial reduction of the fuel consumption cost (about 69.7% of LCC).
