In this chapter, we discuss the recent developments on using UAVs to monitor ground areas and targets. Specifically, we present approaches to finding the minimum number of UAVs equipped with ground‐facing cameras and their deployed positions to fully monitor an area of interest, which can be either a flat area or an uneven area with buildings. We also present the approaches that can find the optimal positions of UAVs to survey a group of ground targets within a certain area. We present the methods for both the 2D and 3D deployment of UAVs. Theoretical analysis on the performance of these approaches is provided, and computer simulations are presented to demonstrate their effectiveness.
