Longitudinal propulsion is generated by the powertrain. There are many possibilities and architectures for an automotive powertrain, and a number of possible solutions are given in the first section of this chapter. The main topic thereafter is the control issues of a powertrain, where the second section introduces the topic of vehicle propulsion control, and motivates the need for control structures in powertrain control. Then, a strategy named torque‐based control is described in the third and fourth sections. For a hybrid vehicle, there is a choice of controlling how much of the requested torque should be provided by the combustion engine and how much should be provided by the electrical motor. Though the powertrain is more complex in this case, the torque‐based structure is still applicable. TThe fifth sections talks about simulation perspectives.
