Rolled and/or forged microalloyed steels have been substituted for conventional quenched and tempered steels for a small but growing selection of automotive components in France, thanks in large part to active cooperation between a steel producer and a leading automaker. The choice of microalloyed steels is often purely based on economics, e.g., due to the elimination of heat treatment, but it is also frequently based on one or more of the microalloyed steels' fundamental but 'complementary' properties. The rationale behind the substitution of microalloyed steels for quenched and tempered steels in a number of Renault automotive components is described. This article is translated in Russian too.
