Alkylpolyglucosides (APG) are highly biodegradable surfactants which have not previously been used in drilling fluids and yet are commonly used in many other fields such as cosmetics. APG are shown in laboratory tests to act synergically with the polymers commonly used in drilling fluids. The addition of APG, even at very low concentrations to a polymer mud can drastically reduce the fluid loss even at high temperatures. Moreover both fluid rheology and temperature resistance are improved.
