The present article describes the extension of the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code FIRE towards the simulation of spray combustion and pollutant formation in diesel engines. The applicability of the computational method adopted is demonstrated via a numerical study of spray propagation, combustion and pollutant formation in a medium speed marine diesel engine. For two engine operating conditions and different injection nozzle / piston geometry configurations space and time resolved flow field quantities and cylinder-averaged global data are presented. The calculations provide a detailed insight into the governing physical and chemical processes of spray combustion and pollutant formation for the engine configurations and operating conditions studied. The results enable clear identification of the important cause and effect of the injection nozzle / piston geometry arrangement on the pollutant formation processes in a medium speed diesel engine. Comparisons of the calculated global results with measaured data show good agreement and provide evidence of the capabilities of the CFD method adopted in the present study.
