For medium to long range civil transport aircraft, there is an operational requirement of high subsonic cruising speed. At these high speeds, natural laminar flow becomes unfeasible and the use of additional boundary layer stabilisation - namely suction - is required to delay transition. The use of suction in conjunction with some geometric recontouring is termed hybrid laminar flow control. Because of the sheer size of the modern turbofan, the achievement of large areas of laminar flow over aircraft engine nacelles offers significant savings in aircraft fuel consumption. Based upon current engine configurations, net benefits of up to 2 % sfc (specific fuel consumption) are believed to be possible. In addition the engine nacelle is ideally suited to the early introduction of hybrid laminar flow technology and, being a relatively self-contained item, there is the possibility of application to existing airframes.
