It is probably inevitable that low-speed two-stroke engines for marine use should use clean fuel because of the distribution of energy resource and environmental pollution problems. Therefore, fundamental combustion tests of neat methanol fuel have been done using the single cylinder test engine typifying low-speed two-stroke precombustion type diesel engine. As a result, the combustion characteristics of neat methanol in this type engine have been clarified and remarkable effect on NOx reduction and good performance have been confirmed.
