The paper first gives an account of the technical development during the last 10 years of a high powered single-acting two cycle marine diesel engine type with uniflow scavenging and turbo-charging, especially concerning the turbo-charging system. Experiences and results, obtained in service on diesel fuel and heavy fuel, are outlined followed by conclusions about possible general trends in future. At last two economical items are dealt with, being closely connected to the main subject concerning high powered diesel installations: Firstly, the total efficiency of the engine, including the heat recuperated from an exhaust-gas boiler, placed in series with the turbo-chargers, is analysed. Finally maintenance costs concerning cylinder liner replacement are figured out in graphical schemes, as a function of liner wear rates and local price conditions, for both cast-iron and chromium-plated liners.
