Running diesel engines on heavy fuels is, from the economical point of view, very advantageous but requires a more complex outfit and improved maintenance. This becomes very important in marine plants, because of the wide range of fuels used and the frequent changes of load. Troubles arising in service may be, however, reduced down to admissible limits. Finding the best technical solution does not mean that the problem is fully solved, since any advantage which can be obtained utilizing heavy oils depends only upon their costs.
