Following the drop in oil price in 1986, and reduced size of new oil fields in recent years, the oil industry had to reevaluate past practice for offshore development and show new creativety to find more cost effective solutions, both with respect to technical concepts, project management and quality assurance. As a competitive alternative for offshore field developments, singificant progress has been made in design and operation of floating production systems. Considerable savings have also been made in management and quality assurance of projects, changing the prototype philosophy towards a more standardized approach that may be used from one field development to another. Classification is an example of a standardized quality system, taking advantage of relevant experience to obtain cost effective solutions.
