Structural reaction injection molding (SRIM) resins provide new opportunities for making automotive composite components economically. The SRIM process makes it possible to rapidly mold composite parts using complex preforms formed by the selective placement of random and directional fiber reinforcements. Mechanical properties can be tailored for stiffness, strength and impact resistance. This paper presents the material properties and structural design capabilities of various SRIM composites. Possible applications and the advantages of using SRIM composites are discussed.
