Measurements of electrostatically induced currents on motor vehicles were made near an operating 1150 kV AC overhead line (OHL) and at a test line. Currents and potentials induced on vehicles and other objects by the corona ion flow were measured under conductors of an HVDC test line at voltages up to 1100 kV. The natural leakage over vehicle tires is shown to reduce drastically the level of the ion flow induction. Various means and methods are compared in terms of their efficiency in reducing electric field intensity (EFI) and electrostatic induction (ESI) levels near 1150 kV AC overhead lines. It is found that using higher HVAC line conductors is an effective, although costly, means of reducing maximum levels of EFI and ESI on vehicles under OHLs; however, it causes an increase of the maxima at a distance from the lines, thus calling for a wider right-of-way. Closer phase spacings effectively reduce EFI near the ground under the line and ESI on vehicles, especially when vehicles are perpendicular to the line.
