Modern traction vehicles make extensive use of power semiconductors for conversion and control of electrical energy in both propulsion and auxiliary systems. The author highlights the effects of power supplies, protection requirements and cooling on the design of such converters. He discusses the different converter types, diode rectifiers for diesel-electric locomotives, controlled rectifiers for AC supplied traction, choppers, inverters, and heat dissipation/cooling of locomotives.
