HUD (head-up display) and VID (virtual image display) technology is reviewed. Examples are given of such displays that have been demonstrated in General Motors vehicles including the 1988 Indianapolis 500 pace car. Studies and field exposure that have demonstrated a high level of appeal to both designers and drivers are presented. It is concluded that virtual image technology offers a potentially positive safety impact.
