The authors present the design and control strategies of the electronically controlled continuously variable transmission called ECVT-II. ECVT-II has been developed by using an electronic control system for line pressure (belt clamping pressure) and pulley ratio, based on the current ECVT with a hydraulic control system. ECVT-II has obtained significant improvements in fuel economy and accelerating performance using the electronic control system. Further, drivability improvement in terms of smoothness while maintaining good response has been realized by applying fuzzy control to the pulley ratio.
