Reports on a project funded by SERC to identify rules used in traffic signal design. The aim is to produce a traffic signal design program combining the rule-based approach adopted by expert systems and existing traffic signal setting algorithms. It is anticipated that such a program for isolated traffic signal controlled junctions will be useful in the UK and overseas. The paper describes what an expert system and an expert system shell are, and presents some of the rules used in the system considered. The system is being written in Turbo-PROLOG.
