The market for electronic systems on trains is growing rapidly as the technology becomes affordable. The operators are demanding shorter lead times and lower prices, but are distancing themselves from the technical details of the equipment they are ordering. This paper describes the evolution from a projectdriven to a productdriven organization in GEC ALSTHOM Transport's electronic systems unit; the development of a product platform into which different modules, developed inhouse or by partners, can be connected; and the resulting manufacturing strategy in which resources are concentrated on the core processes of surface-mount technology and system test.
