A comparison of current and proposed methods for immunity testing of electronic systems for motor vehicles is discussed. Each method is assessed for its suitability for automotive applications. Ideally, test methods need to be found, capable of covering the frequency range of 20 MHz to 1000 MHz. At present there is no one method capable of achieving this. The paper includes an examination of both whole-vehicle and component test methods. Several test methods offer scope for improvement. The results of some preliminary tests carried out by TRL using an 800 mm stripline are described. Discussion is invited on development of the 800 mm stripline, as well as other test methods. The proposed ACEA Amending Directive offers a range of test methods which have been included in the above programme. In addition, the definition of procedures allows scope for variation which could lead to inconsistencies between testing bodies. Discussion is also invited as to how procedures can be defined so as to reduce this variability without over-complicating the test method.
