Various aspects of vehicle location and navigation systems for the urban environment have been considered. It has been seen that while absolute position determination should ideally be used in the urban environment, adequate performance and reliability cannot be obtained from existing or proposed systems. It has been shown that integration with dead reckoning and/or map matching systems overcomes the environmental problems encountered, giving significant performance enhancement together with reductions in the cost of the overall system. The range of available dead reckoning sensors has been considered, and the effects of magnetic interference and vehicle dynamics on these sensors explored. Important aspects of map matching systems and of techniques for selection of complementary systems for integration have also been discussed. The outcome of this systematic approach to design is a cost effective system which provides a competitive and highly marketable product.
