This article presents a system concerning the electrical power usage reminders for smart homes. The system was designed by famous open source software and was implemented by common electronic components for lowering the cost of the system. ZigBee network is adopted for wireless communication between the devices of the system. The electrical power usage information is captured and derived by a current sensor and a voltage sensor. The information is sent from an acquisition device to multiple reminding devices via ZigBee, is displayed on a LCD, and is mapped onto a vertical LED bar of the reminding indicator. The implementation result shows that the low-cost system would actively assist homeowners to save their power usage.
