Press-hardening of micro alloyed boron steels made a substantial contribution in the automotive industry to increase the crash performance and reduce vehicle weights. The need for press-hardened components will increase in the next years. The challenge is to increase productivity and lower the manufacturing costs by lean, safe and robust processes. New heating concepts with consideration of the coating characteristics have a high potential for implementation in new press-hardening lines. Regarding the high requirements at process security, economy and quality of the components thermally robust coatings with cathodic protection offer the best chance for the economic direct press-hardening process.
