This paper provides a snapshot of the ESA standardisation activities related to space communication. It provides an overview of related standards committees and the resulting series of ECSS E50 communication standards. It also includes a description of supporting prototyping activities undertaken by ESA and a summary of future trends. The ECSS E50 series of standards is now well established for current mission usage. New developments are planned within the CCSDS to support the emerging needs for a more network centric infrastructure. As always prototyping remains an important part of the development process.
