The electrical to optical energy conversion of Nd:YAG laser amplifiers is performed by pump diodes that require currents in the range of 50 A to 100 A at pulse parameters of typically 200 micros pulse length and 100 Hz pulse repetition frequency. Dedicated laser diode drivers have to convert constant DC current from the S/C bus into high current pulses of short rise and fall times and specified amplitude flatness. Different techniques of pulse forming are known. They are all based on energy storage techniques that release their energy via a pulse switch to the laser pump diodes. The goal of the study work presented was to find a light weight alternative to the classical E-type PFN approach. Two concepts were selected and breadboarded.
