The results of development, design, and industrial testing of an electromagnetic-acoustic (EMA) technique are considered. An ultrasonic EMA pig flaw detector has higher sensitivity to cracks and can work in gas pipelines as well as a magnetic pig flaw detector does. The EMA pig flaw detector reliably detects cracks with a 10-micron opening, which are almost invisible for a magnetic pig flaw detector. The EMA pig flaw detector combines the possibilities of a pig flaw detector designed for detection of stress-corrosion cracks and a pig flaw detector designed for estimating the state of insulation because it is sensitive to adhesion on both film and bitumen insulation. The performed statistical studies based on the results of combined processing of data of the EMA method and magnetic nondestructive testing have shown that the EMA pig flaw detector has all the possibilities for detection of stress-corrosion cracks at the early stage.
