For the simulation of cabin flow, de-icing, and thermal comfort in vehicle cabins Behr has developed methods based on CFD. A parametric cabin modeller which has been developed in cooperation with ICEM-CFD allows for the generation of the geometry and a high quality CFD mesh within a few days. All methods were validated in extensive studies. The CFD cabin flow analysis is used to study different concepts for ventilation and air-conditioning and their influence on the passenger comfort inside the cabin even at an early stage of development. These methods are part of the development process. CFD cabin flow analysis is a valuable enhancement of the simulation tools used in the product development process. Especially the application of the parametric cabin modeller that enables a fast generation of CFD meshes of passenger compartments. Thus, CFD cabin flow analysis can be applied even in an early phase of development. Extensive validation studies have shown that CFD gives good results compared to experimental data. Further validation of thermal comfort is shown by the correlation to an experimental thermal dummy. CFD allows a detailed analysis of the flow field inside the passenger compartment and can be used to analyse new concepts of ventilation and air-conditioning for the optimized thermal comfort of passengers.
