The protective effectiveness and durability of polyethylene (PE) coatings for steel pipe piles based on coating resistance, thickness and force of adhesion of the PE coating, and the thickness of the steel pipe pile were analyzed. The resistance of the PE coating was measured at depths of the 3.5 and 5.0 m. The thickness of the steel pipe piles in the splash and the atmospheric zones were measured at depths of 3.5 and 5.0 m in the sea side, after removing 15 cm2 of the PE coating. The PE coating was evaluated visually during field inspections and no abnormalities such as exfoliation, cracks, or blisters were observed. The resistance of PE coating at the depth of 3.5 m remained higher than 108 Omega cm2 during the 20 years. The existing thickness of the coatings were <2.5 mm, which was the required PE coating thickness. The results show that the protective effectiveness of the PE coating is maintained for 20 years in an open sea environment.
