Enhancement in penetration performance of tungsten heavy alloy (WHA) penetrators is needed. Research efforts are being made throughout the world to make WHA a maximum possible armor-piercing capability material. Constant demand to provide enhanced material performance is expected to force the emergence of both alternative materials systems and manufacturing processes. Once commercially developed the use of tungsten based functionally gradient materials will provide significant performance advantages as compared to conventional WHAs.
