Cost validation at the end of the design stage is of critical importance for the automotive industry. This paper focuses on the development of a methodology for cost analysis of new designs at that phase of the automotive Product Development Process (PDP). This includes the development of a generic Decision Support System (DSS) to facilitate the design process. The idea behind the proposed approach is that a lot of knowledge concerning manufacturing cost of different subsystems is available from previous designs. This information is not changing significantly from model to model and retrievieng and organising this information into a DSS can support the designer effectivly. For the remaining portion of the design, which is new, it is possible to develop maps for the important design properties plotted against each other. Such maps can provide interval estimates for the cost of different part families and help the Design Department to make early cost estimation of the designs. As costs ranking of different design options could be achieved at the end of the design development process throughout a combined use of a DSS and engineering properties maps, the designs cost ranking enables the Design Department to obtain a very early manufacturing estimate cost of new design concepts and to help the Planning and Finance Departments to concentrate on the most promising option instead of getting involved into, unnecessary timeconsuming estimation loops.
