The complexity of automotive safety systems is increasing in order to provide improved occupant protection under a variety of real-world conditions. Likewise, the electronics required to the interior occupants' type and position is becoming more sophisticated. Sensing system requirements will continue to grow in order to provide 'smarter' or more advanced decision-making capability for higher resolution, situational-specific vehicle safety features. A promising occupant sensing technology currently under development and evaluation at Delphi is a low-power Doppler Radar based Interior Trapped Occupant Sensor (ITOS-R). Operating at radiation levels far below that of common cellular telephones, low-power Doppler Radar has shown to be very effective at detecting subtle movements like respiration of sleeping infants.
