A new method used to reduce the emission of nitrogen oxides from the diesel engines was based on an introducing of reducing agents in the form of chemically active fuel hydrocarbons. In order to obtain partially oxidized and thermally decomposed hydrocarbons, the injection of an additional portion of fuel (the post-injection of fuel) into the diesel engine cylinder during the expansion stroke was implemented. A catalytic converter was used in the exhaust system of the one-cylinder test engine. The efficiency of reduction of nitrogen oxides increased with increasing of additional fuel portion and use of catalysts for activation of the fuel.
