Fuell cell propulsion systems, such as the ones being developed in GAPC (Global Alternative Propulsion Center), offer a good opportunity for efficient and clean powertrains for future vehicles. They can be an enabler to fulfill more stringent emission requirements for toxic emissions as well as for CO2 emissions. Utilizing new alternative energy sources means they could allow us to stretch the timeline of the currently available energy resources. Fuel cell powertrains are thus a step towards sustainable mobility. Opel and GM have created GAPC to play a major role in the development of fuel cell-based components and systems, e.g., the GM fuel cell stack, which provides high power densities. Opel and GM bring their long experience with electric vehicles and fuel cells to this development activity. The project center combines expertise from a variety of different fields into a requirements-oriented system development. Recently a partnership with Toyota to cooperate in selected projects for advanced propulsion systems has been announced. So now engineers and scientists on three continents work together for one goal, a clean, efficient and desirable powertrain for future vehicles.
