With the development of commercial batteries for portable electronic equipment, lithium-ion rechargeable batteries can be expected to be used for space satellite batteries because of these high specific energy and technological maturity. For more than 30 years, NEC has developed and supplied various battery systems such as Ni-Cd, Ni-MH for space programs, and in recent years has devoted itself to developing the lithium-ion rechargeable battery system for space applications. As a result, NEC has been given the first Japanese opportunity to use it as the main power source of the INDEX satellites. Here the battery system development status for space applications is described using commercial lithium-ion technology with manganese spinel cathode.
