A damaged ship may capsize in waves due to water accumulating above the equilibrium waterline, e.g. on a car deck of a ferry. Such a damage case may be considered safe if the average water inflow is so small that the survival time is long compared to the expected duration of the assumed seaway. To estimate the survival time a simple, analytical method is derived which is applicable if there is no substantial water outflow through the opening.
