Automation and robotics have advanced to a key technology for space platforms. An overview of past developments and developmental tendencies in this area is given. Based on a hierarchical structure of task execution and the comparison of the characteristics of man and automated systems, the degree of automation for different types of tasks is discussed. The technological problems are presented with regard to the current state of technology.
