The increasing car population will amplify the contradictory requirements of environmental controls and the most efficient utilisation of energy. The inter-relationships of engine/fuel parameters are extremely complex but must be considered in future attempts to meet the requirements. Until recently, engine parameters, such as compression ratio and lean burning, have been considered separately. To make the most efficient use of compression ratio entails optimising gear ratios. Lean burning usually results in some loss of power output. It is suggested that future engines will utilise a combination of high compression ratio and lean burning whilst running on fuels similar to today's gasoline in terms of composition and quality. This suggestion is derived from consideration of other postulated fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia and methanol. Considering the vehicle as a whole, fuel economy is affected by driving style, and some reductions could arise from introduction of electronic devices for power requirement control. Future vehicle may be of limited engine size with improved reliability, serviceability and a wider use of aluminium. (Buehn)
