In the design of a reactor for ship propulsion ship specific safeta aspects have to be taken into account in addition to the normal safety requirements for reactors. In the example of the design of the NCS-80 core it is demonstrated how these additional aspects can be met by special fuel elements with a corresponding system of burnable poisons that cooperates with one control rod group only. By these means a special shut down condition is fulfilled in particular. At the same time a nearly linear control characteristic is achieved, and a high variation of reactivity per unit of time is obtained. NCS 80 = Nuclear container ship of 80.000 SHP. (Stoehr)
