Due to the recent increase in worldwide air transportation, airfield lighting systems have been installed at many airports. Toshiba has developed airfield light fittings complying with the latest ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) Annex 14, where optical performance was specified and recommended for airfield lighting. Elevated type fittings were designed to be made of plastic, and surface type fittings of aluminum alloy casting, so that small dimensions and light weight could be obtained. Toshiba supplied them for Malaysia's Langkawi Airport in 1986. Furthermore, Toshiba supplied a logical control system with microcomputers in the same year for the airfield lighting at Kimpo International Airport in Korea. This system is suitable for large airports and can reduce labor and avoid mis-operation by controllers in the control tower. These light fittings, logical control system and other airport power supply facilities are described in this paper.
