The percentage of passenger railcars in metropolitan Tokyo with air conditioning has reached 85 %, but there is still a strong demand for improvements in the equipment to eliminate local overcooling and to reduce humidity. The introduction of electronic technology has enabled these needs to be met, increasing passenger comfort by upgrading from cooling to true air conditioning. It has also enabled a rationalization and systematization of railcar equipment, including the power supplies for air conditioning, that has eliminated unnecessary overlaps between equipment, reducing its size and weight and increasing its efficiency.
