This paper discusses recent work which has addressed the potential use of wavefront arrays for high performance 'front-end' signal processing subsystems. A particular application will be considered, namely the adaptive antenna beamformer. STL, together with the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment, is developing an adaptive antenna test-bed using a triangular wavefront arrey processor which implements an advanced leastsquares adaptive control algorithm. Although this development is currently basing the processing node design arround an existing digital processor chip, future developments in Very High Performance Integrated Circuit technology will ultimately lead to the design of extremely fast, programmable processing node devices enabling a diverse range of functional and system applications.
