The functional capabilities and high-level design of the system are presented and its use is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the methodology for the general decision-making framework, the development of the expert knowledge base, the design and organization of the data base and the knowledge base, the interfaces between the decision framework and the expert data and knowledge bases, and the laboratory for the development of the expert knowledge base mission software. The methodology for incorporating this system into the Avionics Systems Analysis and Integration Laboratory (AVSAIL) in an Air Force Laboratory is discussed. It is important to recognize that this approach uses existing technology and proven methods. It is largely off-the-shelf software capable of running on today's computers (e.g., VAX 8600), and no breakthroughs are required.
