The electromagnetic environment in which aircraft have to operate can cause significant upset, failure and even loss. Trends in aircraft and avionic system design are such as to replace electromagnetically insensitive systems with ones that are sensitive. Current and projected aircraft and stores are more susceptible than those that they have replaced. More attention will have to be given to electromagnetic hardening and testing than has been the case in the past, both to ensure flight safety and to remove unnecessary flight restrictions. Since lightning strike and EMP are electromagnetic hazards, hardening and testing should be integrated into the electromagnetic compatibility programme to ensure best use of resources, cost effective hardening and compatibility of hardening techniques.
