Japanese railways are the most advanced in the world in terms of modernization, labor saving, and efficiency based on the introduction of automation systems. We have supplied automation systems based on latest computer and communication technology, thereby contributing to the modernization and higher efficiency of railways. Typical examples are the train traffic control system for the Shinkansen of the Japanese National Railways, the computer total system for the subway line in Sapporo. We also evaluate projects quantiatively by performing computer simulation at the time of planning and designing automation systems. This paper describes a few examples of railway automation systems, and system planning and evaluation.
