British Rail is evaluating a system of track-to-train communication whereby a passive electronic "beacon" mounted on the track sleepers can be interrogated by equipment on a passing train to pick up pre-determined messages such as speed restrictions or the train's precise point on its route. The transponder beacon is programmed to transmit a series of digitally encoded decimal numbers when energised from the passing train and these coded signals can be interpreted by the train's receiver in message form for display to the driver.
