Abstract Telstar, the world’s first commercial communications satellite, was developed by the American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) as a private venture, and launched by NASA on a Delta on 10 July 1962. Although the satellite relayed the first television across the Atlantic, large swivelling antennas were required to communicate with it and the 6,000-kilometre apogee restricted its use as a long-distance relay to brief periods.
