Abstract The United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) is the only body in theUnited Nations system exclusively dealing with the peaceful uses of outer space. Several European countries are member States of the Committee, as are the European Space Agency (ESA) and a number of other European governmental and non-governmental organisations that participate as permanent observers of the Committee. On several occasions the European Union, represented by the European Commission, has also been joining the COPUOS meetings as a temporary observer.
