As ship energy efficiency standards continue to improve and emission regulations become more stringent, there is an urgent need to save energy and reduce emissions for ships. The propulsion main engine, which powers the ship, produces the vast majority of emissions of ships. On the one hand, installing a waste heat recovery unit (WHRU) for the main engine can increase the energy utilization efficiency of the ship. On the other hand, it can also reduce pollutant emissions from the ship. However, the installation of the WHRU will have some impacts on the matching between different parts of the ship propulsion system. Therefore, while maximizing the energy efficiency of the ship, in order to ensure the stable and reliable operation of the ship propulsion system, this paper reorganizes the matching design process for the ship propulsion system based on the change of the main engine's operating condition after adding WHRU, so as to achieve a reasonable matching among the ship, the main engine, the WHRU and the propeller. Finally, this paper analyzes the matching results of the ship propulsion system and the performance of the WHRU according to the real ship data. The results show that after the installation of the WHRU, the energy efficiency of the ship is improved and the operating cost of the ship is reduced.
