This paper describes the methodology in design and construction of a light weight research car, the Volkswagen Auto 2000. The structural concept of a totally welded body was abandoned in favor of a hybrid structure with synthetic material components. The front end, rear end and rear axle are described in detail. The first step in the design of a rigid body frame made of synthetic material is also reported.
