The Garrett TFE731-5 turbofan engine was built on the extensive experience gained from earlier models of the TFE731 family. Ten years and five million hours of operating time, combined with the experience gained in manufacturing over 4000 TFE731 engines, served as the basis for the new TFE731-5. This report highlights some of the more important elements that contributed to the design and development of the -5 model.Special emphasis is placed on subtleties of the actual operational environment, the importance of a well planned and well executed continuing airworthiness program, and the importance of timely field experience feedback to the engine designers and developers.
