This paper introduces the Integrated Vehicle-Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) initiative, a new safety research program sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) aimed at accelerating the introduction of integrated crash warning systems in light vehicles and heavy commercial trucks. These systems will assist drivers and reduce the number and severity of injuries resulting from rear-end, roadway departure, and lanechange crashes. The U.S. DOT, in partnership with a private consortium led by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI), will carry out this initiative. This paper provides a program overview, describes the technologies of major subsystems, and discusses program activities, as well as the evaluation methodology.
